Department:Emergency Services Department
Reporting directly to the Director of Wireless Communications, responsible for installing, removing, programming, maintaining, and repairing various emergency radio equipment utilized by both county and non-county entities.
  • Installs, troubleshoots, maintains and repairs public safety related analog and digital trunked voice radio communication systems and related government furnished equipment (GFE)
  • Installs, maintains, and repairs mobile electronic systems of various types, electronic radio ID systems, microwave systems, mobile data systems, radio alerting systems, and various other systems.
  •  Assists in troubleshooting for tower infrastructure, FAA regulated lighting systems, AC/DC power circuits, HVAC, shelters and radio equipment not covered under maintenance contracts
  • Uses appropriately installed software programs to research maintenance histories and completes work orders as required
  • Performs quality control inspections of repairs made by other technicians, installers, and outside vendors
  • Updates electronic databases, writes reports, creates spreadsheets and uses various other software for radio equipment programming and maintenance
  • Plans and researches new technical equipment and systems for purposes of installation, repair and purchase of new equipment
  • Works with vendors and contractors on maintenance and repair of equipment due to warranty and maintenance agreements for repairs that cannot be performed by county personnel
  • Verifies and documents voice radio system operation and outages
  • Provides technical support to radio system users on current radio equipment and platforms
  • Performs preventive maintenance on county wide public safety radio equipment to ensure peak performance for the County's simulcast radio system
  • Programs radios and updates firmware versions for 800 MHz, VHF, and UHF public safety radio systems
  • Utilizes appropriate software to track radio assets and assignments per county agency
  • Monitors the County's microwave network using Aviat Microwave System and ProVision software
  • Performs directional and omnidirectional antenna system installations for county and non-county entities including EMS and fire stations
  • Utilizes electronic/radio field testing equipment, including but not limited to, oscilloscopes, spectrum analyzers, voltage standing wave ratio (VSWR) meters, coaxial line loss testers, watt meters, multi-meters and CAT5 testers
  • Coordinates with regional system programmers to define county radio network parameters
  • Implements updates to radio programming templates/codeplugs in accordance with county and regional radio system directives
  • Orders equipment and/or ensures supplies are available to successfully complete assignments
  • Performs special duties as assigned

Infrastructure Technician Assignment
  • Schedules and oversees work of contractors working at radio tower sites
  • Performs preventive maintenance on all radio tower sites and completes and/or schedules annual tower site inspections
  • Troubleshoots tower infrastructure, FAA regulated lighting systems, AC/DC power circuits, HVAC, shelters and radio equipment not covered under maintenance contracts
  • Initiates and follows through on capital projects at each site
  • Performs tower antenna and height mapping for regulatory compliance
  • Maintains and submits complete and accurate installation, service, site plans, and inventory record

Programmer Assignment
  • Develops complex programming scripts using Motorola Customer Programming Software for various radio models and features
  • Modifies subscriber information on the regional radio system
  • Reconciles the database of all active radio ID's on the radio system with Provisioning Manager
  • Interfaces with external agencies supplying user configuration, ID numbers, talk groups and system access

  • Position involves prolonged periods of standing, reaching, walking, twisting, bending, repetitive motions, and sitting
  • Position involves occasional lifting and carrying of up to one hundred (100) pounds

  • Work is primarily indoors
  • May be required to perform work outdoors in inclement weather (heat, cold, wet conditions)
  • Potential exposure to dust, fumes, odors, loud noises, bright lights, and technical hazards
  • Regular travel between work sites as required

  • Associate degree or technical training in electronics, networking, and/or radio frequency (RF) and two (2) years of experience; OR four (4) years of equivalent work experience
  • Working knowledge of specific job-related technology

  • Required within thirty (30) days of employment
  • Valid driver's license
  • May be required to obtain
  • Electronics Technician (CET) Journeyman certification
  • Motorola P25 certification
  • Motorola R56 certification
  • Motorola APX Technical Subscriber Academy certification

  • Basic coursework in RF fundamentals
  • Motorola certifications for installation, maintenance and repair
  • Basic knowledge of tower construction and technology
  • Basic knowledge of AC/DC circuits
  • Experience in public safety or governmental communications system

  • Vocational/Technical diploma or certification in a related field
  • Six (6) years of RF technology or related experience
