MISSION: The Texas Education Agency (TEA) will improve outcomes for all public-school students in the state by providing leadership, guidance, and support to school systems.


POSITION OVERVIEW: The Senior Accountant performs highly complex accounting work that requires careful review of administrative and program payment vouchers entered to the agency accounting system (TCAPPS). The Senior Accountant is responsible for the handling and review of the various TEA subsystem voucher payments, including the Foundation School Program payments.  This individual will play a critical role ensuring that the accounts payable team meets its performance goals and supports the agency in fulfilling its strategic priorities by meeting deadlines and maintaining a high standard of accuracy. In addition, the Senior Accountant must have a passion for outstanding customer service to respond to the needs and expectations of a wide variety of internal and external stakeholders. The accountant is expected to contribute his or her knowledge, independent judgment, initiative, and expertise to build on the team's objective of continuous improvement.

  • Ensure proper payment and posting of the Foundation School Program payments in TCAPPS.

  • Ensure proper payment and posting of CNP, EMAT, and TGIF subsystem grant payments in TCAPPS.

  • Assist the AP manager with the approval of AP vouchers prior to their scheduled payment due date.

  • Lead the AP team on PO encumbrance cleanup in preparation of the agency's year-end binding encumbrance report.

  • Provide timely customer service to internal and external stakeholders.







Education: Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university.


Experience: At least four (4) years of accounting experience.


Substitutions: Education and experience may substitute for one another on a year-for-year basis.



  • Experience with accounts payable procedures and processes, CAPPS, USAS, and TINS preferred

  • Knowledge of fiscal programs, governmental accounting, budget control methods, policies, and procedures and of laws and regulations pertaining to financial operations

  • Highly skilled with Microsoft Office and PeopleSoft products

  • Ability to engage in a collaborative, results-oriented team environment

  • Highly organized; ability to manage multiple projects at once and meet deadlines

  • Excellent written and oral communications skills

  • A desire to self-reflect, give/receive feedback and continuously improve
