Job Description


The PSE Staff Engineer works as the lead engineer and as the face of PSE to customers, both internal and external to PSE.  They collaborate with business development and sales teams to identify and qualify opportunities and leads.  The Staff Engineer is responsible for mentoring, coaching, and leading projects to ensure that the work performed by PSE meets customer expectations and works to become the trusted advisor for those customers.

A successful candidate in this role ensures that the work performed by PSE is consistent with the SOW quoted to the customer as well as ensuring that the work performed meets the customer's needs and expectations.

The Staff Engineer will be expected to develop relationships with key customers within their area and work to become the trusted advisor for these customers in order to facilitate a partnership with this customer in order to drive incremental business.

The Staff Engineer is an expert in design, complex relaying, generator applications, complex high-voltage substation design, and NEC and IEEE Standards.  The staff engineer demonstrates safety leadership, is an effective instructor and/or presenter, mentor, a project leader and manages small teams.     It is expected that the candidate has in-depth understanding of power topic(s) and acts as a subject matter expert in various segments and offers.  This includes power system studies, electrical distribution design, PCA, equipment assessments, power quality assessments, and others. 

This role encompasses both business development, engineering, and project leadership.  The Staff Engineer will advise and support Business Development Managers and Project Developers by lending technical expertise when needed and ensuring the customer is aware and comfortable with the capabilities within PSE. The Staff Engineer would then work with various project management functions within PSE (Engineering Managers, Resource Managers, Project Managers) to ensure that the work executed is completed within the time specified and that it satisfies specifications, SOW, and customer expectations. 

The Staff Engineer should acts as a technical advisor to both internal SE entities and to external customers.  They are expected to meet with customers to evaluate their issues and goals and work within the SE to ensure that the offer that is presented solves these issues or meets these goals.  They would then take the lead in ensuring that the executed work, whether performed by the RE or by others within PSE, is performed within specifications or SOW and delivered to the customer within the specified time.


Typical Responsibilities

  • Proposal and quotation development

  • Develop solutions for complex power system engineering problems

  • Technical advice during pre-sale engineering consulting

  • Education of/Consultation with internal/external stakeholders

  • Develops and maintains relationships with key customers

  • Mentor and coach less experienced staff

  • Acts as EiRC or Principal on projects

  • Executes and/or direct engineering work as needed  

  • Works with PM entities to ensure work within area is completed

  • Manages client expectations, facilitates proposal delivery and leads project execution.



Minimum Qualifications:


  • BSEE or MSEE
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license
  • Over 10 years of experience in engineering or team leadership
  • Experienced power system/controls engineering
  • Demonstrated ability to quickly establish trust of clients in a consulting role
  • Proficient in MS Office applications
  • Expert in at least one, if not many, of the following areas of expertise:

    • Electrical power system studies

    • Electrical distribution design

    • Switchgear Automation

    • Electrical power quality assessment

    • ATO programming

    • Relay programming and commissioning
