SUMMARY

Responsible for the oversight of the sales tax compliance process for the Company, as well as other Corporate Accounting functions. Performs various accounting tasks and provides support to the Corporate Accounting Manager

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Oversees the sales tax compliance process, including the securing of sales tax certificates relative to non-taxed transactions by retail stores
  • Scans, reviews, and processes sales tax certificates
  • Oversees and assists in the handling of sales tax exceptions and assists store personnel in resolving exceptions in a timely manner
  • Ensures proper setup of the taxability of inventory items and customer accounts in MAC21
  • Develops and conducts internal audit of inventory items, customer accounts, and sales transactions in order to identify and resolve taxability concerns
  • Prepares training materials and documentation on sales tax procedures for support staff and store personnel
  • Researches and reviews sales tax rules, statutes, etc for all states that the Company has retail operations
  • Supports Corporate Accounting management and supervisors, and Senior Accounting Management, during sales tax audits by preparing documentation, correspondence, etc for sales tax auditors
  • Updates, manipulates, and analyzes data in spreadsheets
  • Reviews expenses and P-Card transactions for proper GL coding, posting dates, receipt documentation, and and sales taxes charged
  • Creates journal entries, accrual entries, and completes various reconciliations
  • Oversees preparation and filing of monthly sales tax returns
  • Oversees scanning, reviewing, and processing purchase card documents, open receivers, customer rebates, and accounts payable documents
  • Oversees Capital project setup and routine capital expenditure reporting
  • Oversees recording and processing Commercial Sales Staff expense reports
  • Oversees production of routine reporting on Fleet Productivity, and Commercial Sales productivity
  • Supports Corporate Accounting management and supervisors, and Senior Accounting Management with projects as requested
  • Performs quality control reviews on bank financials and tax returns along with other miscellaneous reports.
  • Follows Standard Operating Procedures while carrying out the responsibilities of position
  • Attends team meetings and company training sessions as required

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Supervises 3-6 Accounting staff members consisting of Accountants, Accounting Assistants and temporary support personnel which may assist with sales tax audits in the Accounting Department. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising initial performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems


Requirements

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's degree (B.A.) from four-year college or university, or one to three years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common scientific and technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents. Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community. Ability to write speeches and articles for publication that conforms to prescribed style and format. Ability to effectively present information to top management, public groups, and/or boards of directors
  • Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form
  • Ability to utilize strong multi-tasking, organizational, prioritization, and follow-up skills necessary for managing multiple accounting issues at one time in a professional manner and under minimal supervision
  • Ability to utilize Microsoft Word & Excel, IBM Content Manager, Lawson, and other 3rd party software applications at an intermediate level
  • Knowledge and understanding of basic and intermediate accounting principles

  • Prior experience working in the retail industry

WORK AVAILABILITY

  • Must maintain regular and acceptable attendance at such level as is determined by management
  • Must be regularly available and willing to work at least 8 hours per day, 40 hours per week or such other hours per day or hours per week as the employer determines are necessary or desirable to meet business needs
