Under the direct supervision of the Director of Laboratory Services, is responsible for daily operations of the laboratory for the St. David's Medical Center. These duties include, but are not limited to, maintenance of accreditation requirements, personnel activities and education, testing and transport of specimens, and policies and procedures. This position requires in depth analysis and decision making.
GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES (The essential responsibilities and accountabilities of this positionincluding interactions with other departments and outside vendors, ifapplicable, in PRIORITY order.)
1. Manages thedaily operations of the laboratory.
a) Supervises theshift supervisors, medical technologists, medical lab technicians, labassistants and phlebotomist.
b) Coordinates andshares administrative and technical call duty.
c) Coordinatesorientation and training of newemployees.
d) Performs employeescheduling for the medical technologists, medical lab technicians, labassistants and phlebotomist as needed
e) Overseesperformance improvement activities of the Laboratory.
f) Assists withorders and maintenance of sufficient levels of supplies for the laboratory
2. Oversees the technical activities for the laboratory.
a) Assists incoordination of quality control review for the technical areas.
b) Overseesintra-departmental policy and procedure development and implementation.
c) Coordinates aprogram of preventive maintenance and instrument performance checks for theanalyzers.
d) Assists inmonitoring compliance with accreditation requirements.
e) Ensures that theresults of laboratory testing are readily legible and are delivered in a speedymanner.
3. Maintains competency in all areas of the laboratory.
a) Demonstrates goodknowledge concerning techniques and theories of the laboratory.
b) Performs testsaccurately and precisely according to written policies and procedures andestablished practices.
c) Learns and adaptswell to new instrumentation and techniques.
d) Ensures thatassay results are reported in a timely, legible, and meaningful format withappropriate reference values and/or interpretive comments, and delivered to theappropriate clinical practitioner/clinical area.
e) Ensures that testselection and reference ranges are appropriate for the age of the patient.
f) Performs dutieswith minimal supervision, showing appropriate independent judgment.
4. Ensures timely availability of results.
a) Organizes workand work area for efficiency of performance.
b) Performs workwith sufficient speed to allow acceptable turnaround time of results.
c) Demonstrates goodproductivity as judged by efficient use of time and volume of testing and otherduties performed.
d) Prioritizes workappropriate to relative importance and critical nature.
e) Immediatelyreports and documents critical values and tests.
5. Ensures the quality of analyses through qualitycontrol, quality assurance, and maintenance activity.
a) Performs qualitycontrol activities appropriate to each assay/test performed, and respondsappropriately to outlier results.
b) Successfullyparticipates in proficiency testing activities in each technical area for whichthe employee has responsibilities.
c) Participates inpreventive maintenance and repair of instrumentation.
d) Participates inpreparation of calibrators, reagents and other materials.
6. Assumes responsibility for ensuring that variousfunctions are performed during the work period.
a) Ensures that allQC functions needed for the shift are performed.
b) Ensures that allpreventive maintenance functions are performed during the shift worked.
7. Demonstrate understanding of HCA's and “PatientsFirst” safety initiative by strict compliance to all safety protocols andprocedures as well as the safety of self and co-workers.
a) At least annuallyreviews all safety policies, procedures, and materials to maintain currentknowledge of safety issues.
b) Practices safework habits according to policies and standard procedures.
c) Maintains a cleanand organized work area.
8. Performs other duties as directed or required.
LEVEL OF FORMAL EDUCATION REQUIRED:
- Bachelor's Degree in Chemical, Biological, Medical Technology, or Physical Science

Microbiology Experience required; 1-3 years minimum; Two years previous supervisory experience
