Wage/Hour Status: Exempt

Pay Grade: Teacher Placement Schedule

Primary Purpose:

Supervise and manage the school library media center.  Provide services and resources that allow students to develop skills in locating, evaluating, synthesizing, and using information to meet personal and academic needs.  Promote literacy and the enjoyment of reading, viewing, and listening.  Serve as teacher, material expert, and curriculum advisor to ensure that the library media center is involved in instructional programs of the school.



      Bachelor’s degree from accredited college or university

      Valid Texas teaching certificate, with librarian certification or endorsement

      Special Knowledge/Skills:

      Knowledge of current library practices

      Strong organization, communication and interpersonal skills

      Competence in use of current library technology


      Three years’ experience in classroom/library preferred

Major Responsibilities and Duties:


  1. Plan, teach, and evaluate instruction in information skills.
  2. Provide individual assistance to students in identifying, selecting, and interpreting information.
  3. Work with teachers to incorporate information skill instruction into the school’s curriculum.
  4. Interact with students in a consistent, fair, and positive manner.

Instructional Support

  1. Promote appreciation and understanding of literature and reading.
  2. Provide teachers with assistance in selecting, locating, and using information resources and instructional materials.
  3. Provide leadership, instruction and consulting assistance in the use of instructional and information technology.
  4. Participate in curriculum development and assessment on a regular basis.
  5. Coordinator campus level reading promotion programs and activities.

Resource Management

  1. Process and arrange resources according to standard library practices.
  2. Create and maintain a balanced collection of information resources by using standard selection tools, consultation with students and faculty, as well as collection and curriculum analysis.
  3. Manage the use, distribution, maintenance and inventory of library media center resources, equipment, and technology hardware.
  4. Coordinate the acquisition and use of instructional materials from outside sources, such as Education Service Center, instructional television, and other schools.
  5. Create an environment that is conducive to the learning needs of individuals and groups.
  6. Provide fair and equitable access to library facilities and resources through appropriate scheduling.


  1. Develop and administer library budget according to priorities of the instructional program, established guidelines and district business practices.
  2. Maintain systematic records and data as well as compile periodic reports to facilitate program evaluation.
  3. Comply with district and campus policies and procedures as well as federal and state laws.


  1. Perform other duties as assigned.

      Supervise paraprofessionals, student assistants and volunteer

Equipment Used:

      Personal computer, telephone, printer, copier, fax machine, and calculator, office and audio visual equipment

      Maintain emotional control under stress.  Work with frequent interruptions.  Moderate lifting and carrying.  Mobility                walking, standing, kneeling, and reaching.  Accurate vision and hearing.  Repetitive hand motions.
