SUMMARY OF JOB

Editorial assistants provide editorial support to supervising and specialty editors in at least five newsroom departments: metro, state, business, sports, features and photography. This support includes answering telephones and accurately routing calls; handling standard mail and email correspondence; helping to prepare daily story budgets. It also includes gathering information from a variety of sources, verifying the accuracy of the information and synthesizing the verified material into publishable lists, calendars and briefs. Other responsibilities may include preparing the weather page, the financial markets pages, the sports agate page and entering film, prints and accurate cutline information into the computer system.

ESSENTIAL JOB RESULTS AND CRITERIA

Editorial assistants provide editorial support services that free supervising and specialty editors of routine duties and give them the opportunity to focus on their most important responsibilities. The assistants are responsible for efficiently and politely handling internal and external telephone communications, handling and routing mail, email. They compile current, accurate and complete daily, weekly and project news budgets and distribute them to staff and other interested parties. They compile and verify information for calendars, holidays listings, funerals notices and other projects. They post content to computer networks. Prepping local sports agate and television listings for print along with prepping local sports agate for the scoreboard page are main items on the to-do list.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Minimum

Education/Experience

High School diploma with some college.

Experience working in office setting.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Daily reader of the Austin American-Statesman.

Excellent phone manner in dealing with public.

Interest in working in a newsroom setting.

Ability to work well under deadline pressure.

Ability to work effectively with the public.

Able to prioritize multiple duties and work with a minimum of supervision.

Ability to adapt quickly and effectively to changing priorities and environment.

Ability to communicate effectively with all levels of personnel and outside contacts.

Other

Willingness to work flexible hours that may include nights

Valid Texas driver’s license with acceptable driving record

Preferred

Education/Experience

High School Diploma and some college.

3-5 years experience in an office of 20 or more people.

Sedentary work – exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasional and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects. Involved sitting most of the time with occasional walking or standing

Near vision: Clarity of vision at 20 inches or less

Mid-range vision: Clarity of vision at distances of more than 20 inches and less than 20 feet
