    JOB PURPOSE AND RESPONSIBILITY
    Under the department of the Department of Communications and Community Engagement, the TEMP/HOURLY STUDENT ASSISTANT will have a wide-ranging and real-world experience in the areas of communications, public affairs, media relations, graphic design for both print/digital publications. In addition, the incumbent will assist in the coordination of a comprehensive community engagement process to promote and increase parental and community involvement that ultimately strengthens support for students and schools. The student will join a talented team of professionals who are committed to promoting public education and AISD’s programs, priorities and people to the district’s diverse communities--including employees, families, partners, media and stakeholders throughout Austin.

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

    EDUCATION:

    Must be an undergraduate junior, senior or graduate students currently enrolled in communication, public relations, political science, public affairs, advertising or a related field. Writers, marketing specialists, graphic designers and web specialists are encouraged to apply.

    KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:
    *Strong writing and/or design skills, be familiar with AP writing style and will not be intimidated by working with senior leaders, the community or the media.
    *Solid professional phone and e-mail skills, be well-organized, and willing to learn and take direction from experienced professionals.
    *Exceptional oral and written communication skills with a demonstrated ability to translate technical or complex subjects for general audiences.
    *Ability to plan and coordinate the work of a diverse project team.
    *Ability to multi-task and use time efficiently.
    *High degree of integrity in handling confidential information.
    *Temperament to work under pressure and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers and others.
    *Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team.
    *Self-motivated, organized, willing to help with any project no matter how large or small.
    *Experience and proficiency with current technology including Microsoft Office products (e.g. Excel, Word, and PowerPoint).
    *Valid driver’s license
    *Prefer fluency in more than one language, preferably English and Spanish (not required).

    HOURS
    Incumbent will work a minimum of 12 hours each week (and up to 20 hours each week) in four-hour (minimum) blocks of time, which are flexible between 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. Incumbent may work an occasional evening and/or weekend. It is essential for the selected students to commit to the internship for an entire semester.

    SALARY
    $10.00 per hour: The position meets requirements for class credit with most university programs.
