State Deaf For Fiscal Year:
- Interpreting using the sign language system of the educational program.
- Provide oral interpreting when appropriate for the student.
- Teach sign language or cued speech to students and campus staff.
This position requires a high school diploma or equivalent, with one (1) or more years of related experience. Incumbent to be RID or Board for Evaluation of Interpreters (BEI) certified either Level I or basic certification.
Incumbent must have a working knowledge of the Code of Ethics for Interpreters and implications for the educational setting. Incumbent must have the ability to follow the guidelines outlined in the Interpreter Handbook. Incumbent must convey communication at the rate of the speaker, and have the ability to interpret and match levels of expressive signed language or cued speech to the student’s comprehension level. Incumbent should possess knowledge of the implications of hearing loss in the educational setting, and have the ability to teach sign language or cued speech to students and staff. Incumbent should support the communication philosophy adopted by the education program of the district.
JOB PURPOSE AND RESPONSIBILITY:
Incumbent provides interpreting and facilitates communication among students who are deaf and hard of hearing and their classroom teacher, and other personnel in the school district.
OTHER DUTIES AS ASSIGNED:
Perform other related duties as assigned; however, all employees are expected to comply with lawful directives in rare situations driven by need where a team effort is required.
PHYSICAL EFFORT AND WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Work is generally conducted in a classroom environment depending on course material or activities assigned (e.g. field trips and recess may require activities outdoor). Work may contain repetitive motions and cause strain injuries. This position may involve rare exposure to blood or body fluids. Regular attendance is required for this position.
PERSONAL WORK RELATIONSHIPS:
Incumbent reports to the administrator or supervisor in charge. Incumbent consults frequently with the teacher, students, and other staff members.
Duty Days: 205
Pay Grade: CT9
Starting Salary: $19.21/Hr
